COVID-19 Brings New Normal for Club Life

Just days ago, the GFWC Grundy Woman’s Club got back together for its first meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic led to cancellations worldwide back in March.

The meeting was a Fourth of July celebration and business meeting, attended by eight members and held on Thursday, July 2.

2020-2022 Officers Preside Over First Meeting

Grundy Woman’s Club meetings are typically held on the first Monday of each month. That early timing allowed the club to elect its new officers for the 2020-2022 term, just ahead of the Governor of Virginia’s ban on large gatherings. Those officers in attendance presided over this, their first meeting. The 2020-2022 officers include:

  • President Sandy Stiltner
  • First Vice President/Leadership Chairman Diane Lynch
  • Second Vice President/Membership Chairman Peggy Lowe
  • Secretary Judy Holland
  • Treasurer Vonda Slone

Appointments Made

President Stiltner appointed Bertha Street as Fundraising Chairman. She also named a Bylaws Committee, which consists of Betty Shields, Ginger Robertson, and JoBeth Wampler. Stiltner herself will serve on that committee as an ex-officio member.

Buttons, Bows & Panty Hose Fundraiser Draws $100+

Festive red, white, and blue decorations covered the picnic shelter at Vansant Church of Christ, where the meeting was held on Thursday. And a Buttons, Bows, and Panty Hose auction of purses was featured, raising over $100. The fundraiser invited members of the club to bring purses filled with items, ranging from the handy to helpful or zany. Those purses were then auctioned off to benefit the club.

College Shower Revisited

Since the club was unable to host its annual College Shower, members voted to provide gift cards to College Shower recipients in lieu of physical gifts. Two students are selected each year with the help of the Southwest Virginia Community College’s Upward Bound Program and Mountain Mission School. Those two students are traditionally ‘showered’ with gifts at the club’s May meeting, which was cancelled.

The club will continue to host meetings in an effort to get back to normal; though, that normal will now include some members wearing face masks and observing social distancing.
