The General Federation of Women’s Clubs challenged affiliated clubs, like ours, to join in on the 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
Setting a goal of having 1,000 clubs participate, GFWC sent out reminders and suggestions for how clubs could serve their communities in King’s honor.
Here in Buchanan County, Virginia, members of the GFWC Grundy Woman’s Club elected to partner with its public library, reading to kids in Head Start programs throughout the county. With seven Head Start classes, we gathered volunteers, selected our books and prepared to read.
Then, Mother Nature dumped snow, ice, and single-digit temperatures on the region.
With schools closed on MLK Day, we were disappointed not to serve as planned, but we are hardly deterred.
When schools reopen later this week, clubwomen will be there, ready to read and excited to participate in what has become a very memorable Day of Service.
